WHY MSTS HANGS – MYSTERY       SOLVED!!

  • One stronger step towards Error-Free Simulation

I have been playing MSTS since 4 years and have installed and uninstalled MSTS about 400 times or more. I find myself lucky that I have been able to find the solutions of various errors of MSTS through my personal research and generous help of senior Train Sim & IR-MSTS members.

But since the very beginning, I had been experiencing that MSTS hangs all of a sudden and shuts down abruptly to desktop. I tried many patches and fixes but no results. I tried to eliminate all file errors (.eng/.wag/.con/.srv/.sd/.sms, etc) but still I couldn’t solve the problem.

    Now, to be specific,

MY PC specifications are (just to give you an overall picture):-

  • Intel Core 2 Duo E4700@2.6 GHz Processor,

    Intel Integrated G33 Graphics,

    Samsung 2GB DDR2 SDRAM,

    Seagate 500GB HDD,

OS: Windows 7 SP1, all these specs in a Dell Inspiron 530 Desktop PC.

I have been thinking that due to my low-end hardware which is actually 9 years old, was the main cause behind it. But it was never the hardware, NEVER!!

So, before you think of hammering your computer out of frustration and anger as the same I had experienced in these 4 years wait for a moment and read this till the end to get rid from MSTS hanging problem once and for all, yeah, i.e. FOREVER!!

  • THE PROBLEM:-

Due to a bug in Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, your PC gives an error called: “Memory Exception Error” as shown below:

As a result, MSTS always hangs and gets terminated even                    after having plenty of  RAM in my PC, i.e. 4GB!!

  • Now before you hurry to install .NET Framework and the “v1.1 HOTFIX”, please take some time to read and understand this as well:

I am providing here a list of MS .NET Framework versions, their file names and also a link to download the required files (although it is a third party website, it will still direct to the official site links. I chose this for ease; you can do as you wish):-

    http://codecpack.co/download/NET_Framework.html

  • Points to remember:-

    1. v1.0 SP1 was not available anywhere as far as I know. So, you can proceed with installing the v1.0 SP2 & SP3 instead.

    2. v1.1 HOTFIX is our only object of interest and indeed the main solution to the whole problem. Don’t forget to install it.

    3. Just to keep things simple, systematic and functioning properly, I suggest (and I did it too) to first download all the versions and store them in separate named folders(to avoid replacing similarly named files) and then install them one by one from the very beginning!!

    4. I suppose v2, v3 and v3.5 will not install in Windows7 as they come pre-installed. So you can skip to the next ones but don’t forget to try once.

    5. You may need to restart your PC several times if the installer asks you to.

    6. v4.7 can be downloaded directly from the official Microsoft .NET Framework website.

    7. All files were scanned by Quick Heal Anti-Virus Pro in my PC and were found safe. Be sure you check them with your Anti-Virus too.

    8. After having installed all the versions, reboot your PC (to be safe and sure, just saying) and voila!

    9. To know the versions installed in your PC, Go to Control Panel<Programs<Uninstall a program and look for various MS .NET Framework versions you have installed successfully.

    YOUR PROBLEM IS NOW SOLVED!!

    TIP:-

    1. If you’re Open Rails User, don’t forget to install the various versions of Microsoft Visual C++, i.e. 2005, 2008, 2010 and 2013.

    2. Also, don’t forget to install the various versions of Microsoft XNA Framework, i.e. 2.0, 3.1 and 4.0.

  • Now, let’s do a clean/fresh installation of Microsoft Train Simulator.
I am a Windows7 user. I did a clean install of MSTS on my (E 🙂 Drive and then installed all the basic patches and updates strictly as per the tutorial given on:-

  • Now, you can install the routes and rolling stock of your choice. After that, you need to apply the memory acceleration patch (-mem: 512) and Prio Patch (allotting only one core of your CPU to MSTS).

You can do this as follows:-

  • 1. The Memory Acceleration Patch:-

Right Click on the Train Simulator icon on desktop and select Properties. Look for the Target Box. You’ll find this written:-

    “E:\MICROSOFT TRAIN SIMULATOR\launcher.exe” –rungame

You have to delete till “launcher.exe” –rungame” and write this:-

    “E:\MICROSOFT TRAIN SIMULATOR\train.exe” -vm:w -mem:512 /anisotropic/fsaa

    Where,

-vm:w = If you want to play MSTS in a window

-mem:512 = Memory Acceleration Patch, i.e. allotting extra memory to MSTS. Please note that according to experts, it has been reported that MSTS benefits properly only from 512MB of RAM. You must have read the same on Steam4me site.

/anisotropic/fsaa = Patch to handle Graphical Performance of MSTS much better in those computers that don’t have a discrete Graphics Card (GPU) {as far as I know}.

    Click on Save. Done!!

    2. The PRIO Patch:-

As everybody knows about Prio, it is unnecessary to describe the whole thing. But still, I’ll provide the link to download it :-

    https://www.prnwatch.com/prio/

You can allot any one Core of your CPU to MSTS as described below:

    http://msts-roundhouse.vnxglobal.com/tutorials/using-prio

    THE RESULT:-

    Magic!! Pure Magic !!

I opened MSTS. Selected an activity and started playing. You’ll wonder that it never hanged !! Yes !! That’s the Truth!!

MSTS ran very smoothly like breeze and butter. In fact, I never hit the F2(Save) button. Though, you should /can save at regular intervals if you wish to. It’s about personal preference.

MSTS works & looks best in a window at a resolution of 1024×768 on my system.

Therefore, after trials and tribulations of 4 years, I suppose I have found the sure shot solution of this problem.

Please feel free to share your results and opinions about how MSTS is performing in your PC. Your precious feedback and constructive criticism is also awaited. You can mail me or contact me in IR-MSTS Groups on Facebook. Thanks. Enjoy !!

    Happy MSTS Simulation!! 

    Yours faithfully
